FAN SINCE:
I heard my first DY song, "Honky Tonk Man" on the radio and I immediately loved the sound. that would have been in 1989. Not long after that I was in a record store and saw the "Just Lookin' For a Hit" on cassette (I ended up melting a few on the dash of my car over the years!). He didn't tour in Canada very often back then, or when he did it was in the summer when I was on vacation, so I didn't end up seeing him perform live until 1999, that's a long time! I now have everything he's released with only one exception: I have never bought his Christmas album! Anyone know where I can get one? ; ))
FIRST DY CONCERT:
I met some DY fans online in 1997, and we quickly became friends. They were going to Reno, NV in July 1999 to see DY perform for 2 shows at the Silver Legacy Casino and suggested I fly out from Toronto and meet up with them. I said, "Baby Why Not?" and off I went. We went early to hear the sound check and I heard DY singing and the band playing *live* for the first time! As we walked down the stairs to the lower level, it got louder and louder, my heart was pounding! It was surreal, as DY and the band were just people I had seen in photos and voices I had only heard on albums up to that point in time. I peeked through the doors and saw him in person for the very first time. Wow! My heart turned a flip, skipped a beat and I knew right there I never could forget him.
Since then I have travelled to the U.S. many times to see him perform live. I have met many great friends from all over the world who are also fans, thanks DY!
FAVORITE DY ALBUM AND/OR SONG:
My favourite DY album is DwightYoakamAcoustic.net, I don't think I"ll ever tire of listening to it. My favourite song is from that album: "If There Was a Way". I'm hoping he'll do an acoustic tour again some time.
FAVORITE DY MOVIE ROLE:
Oh, I'm sure I haven't seen it yet, he just keeps getting better with each film ; )) I do have one sentimental favourite, "The Newton Boys" where he played explosives expert Brentwood Glasscock. I don't know if it's true, but I read that Dwight wrote the songs for the album "A Long Way Home" while filming that movie. I am really looking forward to Crank 2, I loved the first Crank!
LAST TIME YOU'VE SEEN DY IN CONCERT:
I last saw him perform live at Massey Hall in Toronto in October 2006.
HOW DWIGHT HAS AFFECTED YOUR LIFE:
In too many ways to list, and all of them are awesomecool!
ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD:
I have always been interested in the charities that Dwight supports. In celebration of DY's 50th birthday I coordinated fundraising for the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch http://www.utopiarescue.com. Of course, DY fans pulled out all the stops and raised over US $1700! The money went directly to feed and take care of the animals at the Ranch until they find their forever homes. Two other great things came out of that experience: 1) I became friends with Cousin Nancy who co-manages the Ranch with her husband, Tony; and, 2) I adopted a beautiful dog from them!
It was their first, and only, adoption outside of the US. I had been looking at the photo of "Kris Kristofferson" every time I went to their website, I thought he was such a handsome dog. Several months went by with no adoption, so I finally just asked Nancy if I could adopt him. She said of course! So she loaded him on a plane in San Antonio, TX, he made a connecting flight in Houston and flew direct to Toronto (boy, were his arms tired...HA). That was two years ago, and I love him so much. He is my pride and joy and likes to listen to Dwight's music too!
